Need your advice: Diaper Bag?

So I need to ask you veteran mamas a question: what kind of diaper bag do you have/recommend? What are necessary functions of a diaper bag? Where did you order yours? Anything to steer clear of when picking one out? Do you like for it to be monogrammed, or is it best to get one that is good for multiple kids? Will a diaper bag last for more than one kid? Also, what is a fair price for a quality diaper bag?

I know that I want one that is very functional, that has a good organizational vibe to it, and is not so frilly that my husband won't want to hold it.

Ok - share away! Thanks :)

  1. I can't help too much here, but I will add a few thoughts from a nursery workers point of view! Monogrammed is nice because it is easy to identify whose is who! Its also nice for moms to always use the same one not change up week to week if you have multiple. I have learned which one belongs to which baby and can grab it in a hurry if needed. It always throws me off when someone brings a new or different one! lol

  2. I have a Kalencom diaper bag that I love. It is cute and functional and the fabric is easy to wipe off and clean. I have the smaller size, they make a huge one and a small one, and it has been fine for Anderson. It also keeps me from keeping a bunch of junk in it since i would run out of room... I received it as a gift but I think the small ones run about $60-75 and the big ones $85-100... I thought that was outrageous at first but after looking around I realized diaper bags are expensive. This one is going on 18m of daily use and is holding up great... just dirty from dragging it all over town. I have seen a lot of other moms with this same brand bag so I think my experience is probably typical- it's a great bag. I didn't get it monogrammed but it has a cute tag on it with A's name. That is just my 2 cents. I would definitely choose something that YOU like and want to be seen with b/c in most cases you will probably give up the purse and just take your diaper bag. I know they carry these bags at Picket Fence if you are in town and want to check them out sometime...

I should add that I really don't care about name brands and typically don't buy things from boutiques and stuff, but this bag is worth the $$ and I would/will buy another one for a future baby!

  3. After 2 first year diaper bag fails, i can tell you what to avoid. If I were to do it all over again, I would totally pay extra for Kalencom with the hopes that I could reuse it. After Hadley, I finally figured out the wipeable surface is the way to go. Avoid cloth bags (like those cute quilted type). They get very dirty and most bags can't be washed/only spot cleaned. Plus the cloth/cutesy ones tear more easily. Look for compartments for things like bottles/your phone/keys. Like already mentioned, your diaper bag usually becomes your purse....however I don't completely recommend that when you are dropping baby off for childcare. I've left my phone/wallet in the nursery one too many times. My last bag was one big hole of a bag, and I could never find what I needed. I liked to keep a bigger bag for longer trips out and a smaller one if I'm just out running an errand and not needing baby food/bottles. I wouldn't worry with monogramming. It's just extra $$, and I can't imagine a diaper bag lasting much longer than 2 years. A simple luggage tag works just fine.

  4. I use a Petunia Pickle Bottom diaper bag that I love and would definitely recommend it. Every now and then TJ Maxx, Marshalls or Homegoods will get a stock of them in, I got mine at Marshalls for $40. I did just see them on the Zulily website for under $100, which is still a good deal for one. I’ve been using mine for over 2 years now and it’s holding up very well.

  6. I'm still a new mom but I have a skip hop bag and I love it. I think it's cute but not too girly. They come in a variety of colors. There's lots of little pockets, etc so it's good for organization. And it's easy to wipe down and clean. Oh, and it comes with a little changing pad which is nice.

  7. We use an eddie bauer back pack; not the diaper bag back pack, just a back pack. I have the diaper bag back pack and when we added child number 2 it wasn't big enough. The back pack works so great! I used it in Ethiopia when I went to pick up our son and have continued to use it ever since. I can put bottles (now sippy cups) on the sides and in the front pocket all my traveling meds and stuff, and then inside diapers, toys, blankies...you name it; perfect! Can't wait until you get your referral. We are within weeks of getting on the wait list again to adopt from Ethiopia.

  8. We have this one: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3199294&CAWELAID=271517373

It's a Columbia bag with plenty of organizational pockets inside and out, an insulated bottle pocket, and a changing pad. I chose this one because it didn't cost an arm and a leg, it was well made, and James would not feel weird carrying it :) It also comes in red. It was great with one baby and now with two. I intend to keep it until it falls apart and then replace it with another just like it :)
